Good Sunday morning to you! In about a week, our Gnomes will begin learning about dividing fractions and will need cans of Play-Doh for modeling. I would like to have one complete classroom set to use with all of my cores (32 cans). If you are able, please send some Play-Doh with your student this week. The cans need to be standard size and can be any brand. Thank you in advance!
Topics for the Week:
Monday: Histograms I
Tuesday: Histograms II, Review for Quiz
Wednesday: QUIZ ON DATA ANALYSIS
Thursday: Unit Review, Study Guide
Friday: UNIT TEST ON DATA ANALYSIS
Here is the link to the Unit Resource Site to study and practice.
*I am also attaching a copy of the Released version of the 6th grade EOG Test for math. Students will be taking this practice eog test in Spartan Time this week and we will review it in math class starting next week. After the quiz and unit test this week we will be finished covering new material. The next few weeks of EOG Review will be VERY IMPORTANT to prepare for the Math EOG on June 17th.
*I am currently running low on my candy supply. Thanks to everyone who donated after Halloween. If anyone else has some extra candy lying around at home or would like to donate some candy I would greatly appreciate it. PLEASE HELP ME BRIBE YOUR CHILDREN!!!!
Schedule for the week:
Monday: Triangles and Angles Quiz
Tuesday: Field Trip
Wednesday: Review Day 1
Thursday: Review Day 2
Friday: Unit Test on 2-Dimensional Geometry
* The students have been working on a Study Guide this week and we have been reviewing in class to prepare for the upcoming unit test on Friday. After the test on Friday there will only be 2 more units of new material. That means only 2 more quizzes and 2 more tests for the quarter. With EOG review and testing, there are fewer overall grades in the 4th quarter.
Thanks. Have a wonderful week!

Today in class we discussed the topic of interest and how it applies to borrowing and saving money. It is a relatively new concept for most of the students mathematically so feel free to discuss at home how interest plays a part in your everyday lives. The more the students understand the concept of interest and how it works, the better they will be at solving application problems in class. Anything from mortgages to car loans to bank balances to credit cards are all good conversations to have at home with your student.
I will send home a study guide at the end of this week and the next unit test will be early next week.
Most of the Benchmark scores are in (except for make-up testing). We spent some time this week in math class looking at our scores and analyzing the data. Each student should have completed an item analysis sheet that helps them see strengths and weaknesses on the different types of math questions. I also conferenced individually with each student to discuss their benchmark scores and compare it to how they have performed in the past. Please ask your student at home about their benchmark score and how it compared with their past performance in math. I think it is worthwhile to analyze and reflect on these things to gauge whether the students are on the right track or need to make some changes before the end of the year.
Welcome to the Third Quarter! In math class, this quarter will involve topics such as Ratios, Unit Rates, Proportions, Percent Applications, and 2-Dimensional Geometry. Specifically, here are the topics for this week:
Tuesday: Ratios and Unit Rates
Wednesday: Ratio Tables
Thursday: Better Buy / Unit Rates
Friday: Double Number Lines
Saturday: Quiz on Ratios and Rates

Half way through this school year I would to remind students and parents of the importance of ambition and resiliency. My expectations for the students will grow in relation to their academic growth in the classroom. Please communicate with your child the importance of staying focused and present in the classroom. In addition, making corrections on assessments and peer tutoring are important pieces to overcoming difficult topics and being successful in the math classroom. Enrichment activities are available for each unit of study and tutorial videos are available with guided notes on nearly every math lesson covered in class. All of these can be found on the Unit Resource Site. We also receive monthly math magazines that show the real world application and relevance of the concepts we are learning this year. The articles relate to current topics and trends that are popular with middle school students. Finally, the online game Prodigy will continue to be a practice resource that students should utilize in replacement of traditional math homework. I update the game with each new unit so students will have appropriate practice material.
I look forward to a renewed effort as we move into the second half of the year.
