Science Update

Dear Parents,

First, thanks a ton for sharing your kids with us! I know I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again, but they really are a remarkable bunch. I enjoy working with them every single day.

Second, a few details on science class:

Finishing Compounds, Mixtures, Elements and Solutions: We’ve spent the majority of this week working on an activity designed to help students understand the differences between compounds, mixtures, elements and solutions. If you are looking for a way to see if your child is paying attention in class, ask them to explain to you the difference between compounds and mixtures. The key words to be on the lookout for: Compounds are substances formed when two or more materials are “joined” or “chemically bonded” together. Mixtures are substances formed when two or more substances are “mixed” or “stirred” togther, but can be separated again by physical means.

Unit Test Likely Postponed Until Next Wednesday: We were shooting for a unit test on Friday of this week, but the activity that we are currently working on has taken longer than planned. That activity should be finished today. We will begin reviewing for our unit test tomorrow. The test will probably be given on Wednesday of next week.

Several Study Guides Handed Out: To help your students prepare for the unit test, I’ve given them three different study guides. One is being graded in class today. The other two are being handed out in class today. Answer keys are posted in Google Classroom.

Hope this helps,
Bill Ferriter
