Science Update

Dear Parents,

Just a quick update on what is happening in science class:

We are in the process of studying the layers of the earth. Students are currently completing a hands on activity where they are determining how reasonable an egg would be as a metaphor/model for the layers of the earth. The written product for that activity will be due on Friday. Digital copies of the handouts can be found in Google Classroom.

We will be moving on to a study of plate tectonics. The key concept for students to learn about the layers of the earth is how each layer has an influence on life on the crust. Specifically, we’ll be looking at how movement of material in the mantle leads to the movement of the crustal plates. Kids usually really enjoy making this connection.

Finally, we’ll move to a study of rocks and soil. The final concept in our Lithosphere unit is about the formation of rocks and the importance of soil.

My guess is that we will get through tectonic plates and types of rocks before tracking out and then will study soil after track out.

Hope this helps,
