LA Update

It’s good to be back!

Lots going on in language arts. First of all, I introduced a mini-project to the students that will not be due until the end of quarter three. This can be a difficult thing for students to manage since the deadline is so far away. I will continue to remind them of the project throughout the quarter, but reminders at home will certainly help as well. The project list can be found at the top of my website. Students may use a novel of their choice, and must complete one of the several mini-projects listed. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Also, I will be introducing a major group project to the students on Friday. It is called the Grant Project. Students will work in groups of two to four, each researching a world issue and possible solutions. After researching the topic and possible solutions on their own, the students will work together to create a presentation. They will present their findings to a “panel from the United Nations” to plea for a grant to support their cause. This project covers a wide spectrum of skills from researching and synthesizing information to using persuasive and presentation techniques in a meaningful way.

We will be reading one article about each of the six world issues next week to give them a little background information. Three will be read in class and three will be assigned for homework. The homework articles are posted on my website. After reading all six, students will have some choice in deciding which issue they would like to learn more about.
