We wrapped up our first writing unit this week with the autobiographical posters. The kids did a fantastic job and hopefully they now have a good understanding of the importance of the writing process. Although it sometimes seems tedious to them, each step is crucial.
We will turn our focus to reading next week by beginning our introduction to fiction. We begin this part of the unit by reading the short novel, Seedfolks. It’s a fabulous story with lots to be uncovered. I encourage any parents who may be interested to purchase a copy of their own and read along with us ($4.50 on Amazon Prime). We will get through an average of two chapters per day.
We use this novel to introduce the characteristics of fiction (characters, mood, tone, etc.) and continue with our unit theme, “Who Am I?” Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view, and the characters are from all over the world, with all kinds of interesting background stories. I look forward to the discussions and perspectives your students will bring to the book!
Lastly, I have taken a couple of grades from the students, and these will show up in Power School next week. Students had a notebook check, a writing process quiz, and I collected the autobiographical posters. Please be on the lookout for a grade update next week.
Feel free to email me with any questions, and have a wonderful weekend! You can check out my website for more details on next week, www.mrsbarrowsclass.pbworks.com.
