Math Update Quarter 1 – Week 1

Hello Parents and Students!

Welcome to 6th grade! I hope the first week went smoothly for you and things are settling down with all of the new settings and procedures. We have enjoyed seeing your students this week and look forward to week 2!

I normally post weekly to our Gnomes site with reminders about homework, upcoming assessments, and available resources. You can link to my math page from the top menu on this site or go there directly: http://www.adamlovemath.wikispaces.com On the site you will find homework for the week and all of the resources available for help and practice at home. Each unit has its own page and the decimals page is already available for students. Please browse the site so your student knows where to find help in math when it is needed.

BYOD:

Some other exciting news for this school year is that I was selected to participate in the Governor’s Teacher Network (GTN). The basics of my work with GTN is that I will implement action research in my classroom on piloting a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. The program will be optional for students and the main implementation of allowing students to bring their own devices to school will not begin until 2nd quarter. I have always believed in a blended classroom with teacher direction and technology integration. I am hoping to find the right mix to benefit my 6th grade math students. Here is a video about the BYOD Program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSXyfX8ABhA

We can not allow students to bring their own devices without first addressing and learning about Digital Citizenship. The first week of each quarter in Spartan Time (2nd period), students will be working on a Digital Citizenship Curriculum from Common Sense Media. It is a great resource for parents to monitor any type of digital media. Common Sense Media reviews movies, video games, apps, websites, etc. for parents to gain insight to what may be appropriate for your child. You can view the videos and lessons we are covering with the students through my specific Digital Citizenship Page. The curriculum covers topics such as cyber-bullying, digital footprint, copyright, plagiarism, online scams and schemes, etc. I will send out more information throughout this 1st quarter as we get close to implementing this voluntary program with the students. I will also give more details at Open House later in the month.

Class Dojo:

By now you have probably seen the form sent home with parent and student codes to login to this site or app. Most parents are already connected with us through Class Dojo. It is a way for us to keep in constant communication with you about your child’s behaviors at school. Good or bad we can award points for any type of school behavior. It is a good way for parents to see trends across classes and hopefully motivate students for success or analyze possible areas for improvement. Here is an introductory video about how it works: Class Dojo

Compacted Math (6plus/7plus):

For the parents of students enrolled in the Compacted math course I will be holding two general information/Q&A sessions this upcoming week. Tuesday August 5th and Thursday August 7th from 2:30-3:00. I will cover the logistics of the compacted math course and answer any questions or concerns related to the class. Look for a specific email invitation from me on Monday about these info sessions.
